Governor Beshear appoints Commissioner of Department of Veteran’s Affairs
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 2, 2009) - Governor Steve Beshear has appointed former United States Representative Ken Lucas to serve as Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Veteran's Affairs. In this capacity, Rep. Lucas will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Department of Veteran's Affairs as well as the coordination of 18 statewide field office locations, healthcare outreach and cemetery services.
Rep. Lucas is a distinguished public servant who has dedicated his life to the betterment of the Commonwealth and the nation. Born and raised in Grant County , Rep. Lucas joined the United States Air Force shortly after his graduation from the University of Kentucky . During his 12 year career—first in the US Air Force and then the Air National Guard—Lucas maintained a reputation as a first-class pilot, eventually attaining the rank of Major.
A tireless advocate for both economic development and education, Rep. Lucas served the people of Boone County as County Judge Executive from 1992-1998, during which time he successfully guided the community through a period of rapid growth and development. In 1999, Rep. Lucas was elected to represent Kentucky ’s Fourth District in the U.S. House of Representatives where he served his Northern Kentucky constituents for three terms. As a Congressman, Lucas proved to be a tireless advocate for veteran’s affairs in addition to his service on the Homeland Security, Financial Services and Agriculture Committees.
“Representative Lucas has committed himself to serving and protecting our state and nation, both as a commanding officer in the US Air Force and as an elected official,” said Governor Steve Beshear. “His outstanding record of leadership will prove to be an invaluable resource to the Kentucky Department of Veteran’s Affairs.”
Rep. Lucas will assume the position of Commissioner from retired U.S. Army Brigadier General Leslie “Les” Beavers, who has served the Commonwealth diligently since his first appointment in 1998.
