Joe was downed on August 1, 1968 in the vicinity of Ban Katoi while on a bombing run in an F-4 with William Thompson, also still missing. No recovery of Coach 1 occurred although the Vietnamese sighted a downing on this date in the vicinity in a document in 1995. Different coordinates are given in various documents. The government announced his status in 1975 as 'dead' so that benefits and closure could occur for the relatives. He is still MIA. His name was reported as having been on the prison walls by several returning POW's as per the return interviews. He was a graduate of the Air Force Academy. I have information that he survived the crash for a 2 year period, but no substantiation of any merit. (additional information provided by Patricia Gordon, Nov 2003)
